Earthquakes Near Me

Live seismic activity near your current location, powered by USGS data.

Requesting your location…

What does "earthquakes near me" mean?

This page uses your browser's geolocation API to detect your approximate coordinates and then queries the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program for all earthquakes within your chosen radius (50–500 km) recorded in the past 7 days.

Only earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater are shown — smaller micro-earthquakes are filtered out as they are rarely felt. The USGS catalogue is updated continuously; data on this page refreshes every 5 minutes.

Your location is never stored on our servers — coordinates are used only to query the USGS API from your browser session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if there's an earthquake near me?

If an earthquake is close and above M4.0, be alert for aftershocks. If you are inside, stay away from windows and unsecured shelving. If shaking begins:

  • DROP to your hands and knees
  • COVER under a sturdy table or desk, or against an interior wall
  • HOLD ON until shaking stops

After shaking stops, check for gas leaks and structural damage before moving around. See our full earthquake preparedness guide.

How close was the earthquake to me?

The USGS "place" field shown on each earthquake (e.g. "23 km NE of City") gives the distance from the epicentre to the nearest named locality — not necessarily your position. All earthquakes listed are within your chosen radius from your coordinates. Click any earthquake for its exact epicentre coordinates and depth.

Remember that depth matters: a shallow earthquake (under 70 km) at your doorstep can feel stronger than a deeper magnitude-6 event 200 km away.

Why can't I see earthquakes from more than a week ago?

The "near me" view is intentionally limited to the past 7 days to keep results actionable and relevant to current seismic conditions. For older events near a specific place, use the Recent Earthquakes page or browse by country.

My location was denied — how accurate is the city search?

City coordinates are city-centre points, accurate to within a few kilometres for most major cities. For a precise search, allow location access — browsers typically provide accuracy within 10–50 metres using GPS or Wi-Fi triangulation.
